“As I’ve traveled all over the world, the fact that I’m a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has caused a lot of interesting questions. I’ve received so many letters and e-mails asking things like, What are the basic beliefs of Latter-day Saints?”

My Testimony

Listen

…Some want to know how Debbie and I have been able to maintain a strong marriage — over all these years — while living in the world of show business. Others want to know how we dealt with the challenges of raising a close and happy family in such difficult times.

How do we maintain a balance between work, and family life? Well, you know it’s not always easy, but the following pages are my attempt to explain a way of life that helps answer these kinds of questions. It gives me stability in a world, and in a business, that can be uncertain, compromising, and stressful. It’s the pattern that gives me direction in my life. And, I hope that this information will help answer some of your questions.

    I noticed reading numerous sources and diaries that Brigham Young taught Adam was God? This went on for 25 years at the pulpit to the people and can’t be discarded as opinion. A true prophet (God’s mouthpiece) could not err?

    Hi Darryl,

    Your observation, of course, is not new, but has been discussed for over a hundred years, I suppose.  This concept, which is reported as one which Brigham Young strongly espoused, was never canonized, which means to be accepted as official Church doctrine or practice. Yes, this certainly is what I’ll refer to as an apparent anomaly, but frankly, it doesn’t diminish my conviction of the truthfulness of the restored gospel in the least.

    We do not claim that living prophets are infallible.  Some who learn of our commitment to “follow the apostles and prophets” who lead Christ’s Church by revelation from him, accuse us of being “blind sheep” being led along without our own agency or even divine direction.  Each of our Heavenly Father’s children are ultimately responsible for their own faith which is promised to come from him through the Holy Ghost:

    15  ¶ If ye love me, keep my commandments.
    16  And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;
    17  Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.

    26  But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.  (New Testament | John 14:15 – 17; 26)

    9  But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.
    10  But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.

    14  But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. (New Testament | 1 Corinthians 2:9 – 10; 14)

    Jesus Challenged each of us to:

    7  ¶ Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you:  (New Testament | Matthew 7:7)

    This does not mean that we do not look to the apostles and prophets for leadership and direction in our lives for…

    7  Surely the Lord GOD will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets.  (Old Testament | Amos 3:7)

    Jesus said to his apostles:

    40  ¶ He that receiveth you receiveth me, and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me.
    41  He that receiveth a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet’s reward;
     (New Testament | Matthew 10:40– 41)

    So, yes, the Lord has established ways to communicate to us; one being through living prophets and their scriptural writings but more more importantly to us directly through the Holy Ghost.  Most ignore both and thus the Lord’s statement:

    4 Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.  (New Testament | Matthew 7:14)

    It is interesting to me that so many are attempting to justify their lack of living righteously by focusing on things that others, including some things that even Joseph Smith or Brigham Young, did or said and fail to seek their own divinely offered convictions.  How much more important would it be to focus on following Jesus Christ and preparing to meet him at the judgement bar and to qualify to share “life” with him and the father in a state of glory and joy forever and ever.

    16  The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:
    17  And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.  (New Testament | Romans 8:16 – 17)

    As a potential “joint heirs with Christ” each of us stands to be “…appointed heir of all things…” (New Testament | Hebrews 1:2).  It would seem to me that if more time were spent in an effort searching the truth than to try to destroy it, individuals could find the “path” that leads to such a lofty eternal success.

    18  But, behold, the righteous, the saints of the Holy One of Israel, they who have believed in the Holy One of Israel, they who have endured the crosses of the world, and despised the shame of it, they shall inherit the kingdom of God, which was prepared for them from the foundation of the world, and their joy shall be full forever.
    (Book of Mormon | 2 Nephi 9:18)

    We would love to discuss those truths with you if you are interested.  Let me know.

    Thanks,
