This is a very large question and yes, I do believe in Heaven, but our understanding of what heaven is like and how we qualify to be there is a lot different from the traditional Christian denominations. I am going to attach, a chapter we wrote on Life After Death. It also deals briefly with what what we must do to “get to heaven”. Your question was asked by a group of people anciently who heard Peter preach of Christ and with their new found faith in Jesus Christ:
36 Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ.
37 ¶ Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart [In other words, they had faith that Peter spoke the truth,], and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do?
38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. (New Testament | Acts 2:36 – 38)
Note: The gift of the Holy Ghost is given by the laying on of hands by those who have been divinely appointed and ordained with priesthood authority (see John 15:16; Acts 8:15-20)
In a nutshell, we must have enough faith in Jesus Christ to repent of our sins, be properly baptized, receive the gift of the Holy Ghost by the laying on of hands by one having the true priesthood authority and endure to the end (see Matthew 10:22).
3 We believe that through the Atonement of Christ, all mankind may be saved, by obedience to the laws and ordinances of the Gospel.
4 We believe that the first principles and ordinances of the Gospel are: first, Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ; second, Repentance; third, Baptism by immersion for the remission of sins; fourth, Laying on of hands for the gift of the Holy Ghost.
(Pearl of Great Price | Articles of Faith 1:3 – 4)
We believe that the priesthood authority was lost from the earth following the death of the ancient apostles which Paul call the “falling away” which he said would also precede the second coming of Jesus:
1 NOW we beseech you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and by our gathering together unto him,
2 That ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand.
3 Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first,
and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;
(New Testament | 2 Thessalonians 2:1 – 3)
We claim the the falling away predicted by Paul necessitated the restoration foretold by Peter and that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is a result of Christ’s personal direction in restoring his true gospel, priesthood authority and Church organization in these latter days. We have living apostles and prophets again today who receive revelation from the Lord in leading his Church today and in directing the preaching of his gospel to all the world as promised by the Lord himself:
14 And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.
(New Testament | Matthew 24:14)
I would love to share more about this restoration, if you are interested. Let me now.
