My Beliefs
“As I’ve traveled all over the world, the fact that I’m a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has caused a lot of interesting questions. I’ve received so many letters and e-mails asking things like, What are the basic beliefs of Latter-Day Saints?”
My Testimony
…Some want to know how Debbie and I have been able to maintain a strong marriage — over all these years — while living in the world of show business. Others want to know how we dealt with the challenges of raising a close and happy family in such difficult times.
How do we maintain a balance between work, and family life? Well, you know it’s not always easy, but the following pages are my attempt to explain a way of life that helps answer these kinds of questions. It gives me stability in a world, and in a business, that can be uncertain, compromising, and stressful. It’s the pattern that gives me direction in my life. And, I hope that this information will help answer some of your questions.

Why Do You Claim Your Church is the True Church?
Hi Donny, I’d like to begin by thanking you for taking the time to answer questions like this. It’s very generous of you. Also, I just wanted to say that I grew up watching your family, and have admired all of you since I was 4 years old. Please accept my heartfelt thanks for all the joyful memories you and your family have brought to me my whole life. The Osmonds are a real class act! My question has to do with the LDS belief about the different levels of Heaven. I am wondering if someone in a lower level would ever be able to move to a higher level in the eternities….or are they stuck in the lower level forever? Also, what about families who are good, loving, charitable, and God-fearing, but not Mormon? Why would God not let non-Mormon families be together forever? Aren’t we all important to God? This question is not meant as a criticism of LDS doctrine….I’m really sincerely just trying to understand. Thank you again, Donny, for taking the time to answer. I’d like to wish you and Debbie a belated Happy Anniversary, and I wish the entire Osmond Family all the joy and happiness in the world. Love you all! Sincerely,

Response:
Thank you for your very kind remarks.
This is a very good question, and I am not sure that I understand all of the implications of the passage that the Lord revealed on the subject:
The answer to this question is difficult for many who have not diligently sought to find the Lord’s true gospel, but the warning is clear:
13 ¶ Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: 14 Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it. 15 ¶ Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. 16 Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? 17 Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. 18 A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. 19 Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. 20 Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them. 21 ¶ Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. (Matthew 7:13 – 21)
Many have used the warning to beware of false prophets to discount the claim of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints which is that the Church is led by living true apostles and prophets. The key is to be able to identify them by their fruits. The following passage emphasises the importance of receiving the true prophets as Jesus said to the apostles and prophets who were with him:
40 ¶ He that receiveth you receiveth me, and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me. 41 He that receiveth a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet’s reward; and he that receiveth a righteous man in the name of a righteous man shall receive a righteous man’s reward. (Matthew 10:40 – 41)
The importance of the true church being led by living Apostles and Prophets is emphasized in these passages, the first comparing the organization of his ancient church to a building and the second to a body:
9 Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God; 20 And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone; 21 In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord: (Ephesians 2:19 – 21)
And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; 12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: 13 Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ: 14 That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; 15 But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ: 16 From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love. (Ephesians 4:11 – 16)
7 Surely the Lord GOD will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets. (Old Testament | Amos 3:7) 20 Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. 21 For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost. (2 Peter 1:20 – 21)
Why am I answering this question by emphasizing the importance of prophets in the Church? Well, because without revelation through prophets, the Church is left to be led by private interpretations of men and as is obvious, they vary as broadly as there are different churches and even as varied as there are individuals in the churches.
Assume with me, for a moment, that there are true and living prophets on the earth. What responsibility do we have to learn of them and follow them? The passage that I quoted above holds the answer:
40 ¶ He that receiveth you receiveth me, and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me. 41 He that receiveth a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet’s reward; and he that receiveth a righteous man in the name of a righteous man shall receive a righteous man’s reward. (Matthew 10:40 – 41)
We claim that revelation through a prophet in modern times, the complete organization, gospel, and priesthood authority have been restored to the earth (see attachment) and there has been much revealed through the prophet Joseph Smith and subsequent apostles and prophets, even those living today.
For Example, Peter received special binding power or keys from the Lord:
11 And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. (Matthew 16:19)
Through revelation of our modern prophets, we know these keys had to do with binding families together forever in some special eternal patriarchial relationship. I do not think that this doctrine suggests that members of families cannot be in association, but we do believe that the typical marriage vows “until death you part” is exactly right as it relates to the marriages performed by anyone not holding those keys that were given to Peter. These keys were an important part of the restoration as Peter himself and other heavenly messengers ordained Joseph Smith and others with the keys of authority and gave specific instructions on how and where these eternal bindings were to be performed. The where is in sacred temples that the Lord commanded to be constructed in which these most sacred eternal marriages could be performed by those duly ordained with these special keys.
That these blessings are offered to everyone of Heavenly Father’s children is part of the Lord’s plan as these sacred bindings are being performed in the temples in behalf of hundreds of millions of those who have died without the opportunity to learn of and participate in such blessings. Those yet living are universally invited to:
7 ¶ Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: 8 For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened. (Matthew 7:7 – 8)
It seems that most are not really exercised enough in learning of God’s plan of salvation and of what will be required to be bound to their families by these keys to try to seek, ask and knock. They seem satisfied with the traditions and interpretations of men, some of whom the scripture refers to as righteous men, and they will receive the righteous men’s reward.
A clear understanding of Paul’s description of the three degrees of glory, has been clearly revealed. Paul wrote: 40 There are also celestial bodies, and bodies terrestrial: but the glory of the celestial is one, and the glory of the terrestrial is another. 41 There is one glory of the sun, and another glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars: for one star differeth from another star in glory. (1 Corinthians 15:40 – 41)
We now know that the celestial glory is a prophet’s reward and the terrestrial glory is a righteous man’s reward. Notice the huge difference in the glory of these kingdoms, comparing the sun to the moon. Revelation through modern prophets clarifies that preparation for the celestial glory includes the binding of families by the proper keys in the designated temples. This may seem exclusive to those not wishing to diligently seek the Lord’s ways in all of this, but please remember there is an open invitation to all.
Here is the revelation to Joseph Smith, the prophet, and Sidney Rigdon on February 16, 1832 in Hyrum, Ohio:
50 And again we bear record’for we saw and heard, and this is the testimony of the gospel of Christ concerning them who shall come forth in the resurrection of the just’ 51 They are they who received the testimony of Jesus, and believed on his name and were baptized after the manner of his burial, being buried in the water in his name, and this according to the commandment which he has given’ 52 That by keeping the commandments they might be washed and cleansed from all their sins, and receive the Holy Spirit by the laying on of the hands of him who is ordained and sealed unto this power; 53 And who overcome by faith, and are sealed by the Holy Spirit of promise, which the Father sheds forth upon all those who are just and true. 54 They are they who are the church of the Firstborn. 55 They are they into whose hands the Father has given all things’ 56 They are they who are priests and kings, who have received of his fulness, and of his glory; 57 And are priests of the Most High, after the order of Melchizedek, which was after the order of Enoch, which was after the order of the Only Begotten Son. 58 Wherefore, as it is written, they are gods, even the sons of God’ 59 Wherefore, all things are theirs, whether life or death, or things present, or things to come, all are theirs and they are Christ’s, and Christ is God’s. 60 And they shall overcome all things. 61 Wherefore, let no man glory in man, but rather let him glory in God, who shall subdue all enemies under his feet. 62 These shall dwell in the presence of God and his Christ forever and ever. 63 These are they whom he shall bring with him, when he shall come in the clouds of heaven to reign on the earth over his people. 64 These are they who shall have part in the first resurrection. 65 These are they who shall come forth in the resurrection of the just. 66 These are they who are come unto Mount Zion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly place, the holiest of all. 67 These are they who have come to an innumerable company of angels, to the general assembly and church of Enoch, and of the Firstborn. 68 These are they whose names are written in heaven, where God and Christ are the judge of all. 69 These are they who are just men made perfect through Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, who wrought out this perfect atonement through the shedding of his own blood. 70 These are they whose bodies are celestial, whose glory is that of the sun, even the glory of God, the highest of all, whose glory the sun of the firmament is written of as being typical.
71 And again, we saw the terrestrial world, and behold and lo, these are they who are of the terrestrial, whose glory differs from that of the church of the Firstborn who have received the fulness of the Father, even as that of the moon differs from the sun in the firmament. 72 Behold, these are they who died without law; 73 And also they who are the spirits of men kept in prison, whom the Son visited, and preached the gospel unto them, that they might be judged according to men in the flesh; 74 Who received not the testimony of Jesus in the flesh, but afterwards received it. 75 These are they who are honorable men of the earth, who were blinded by the craftiness of men. 76 These are they who receive of his glory, but not of his fulness. 77 These are they who receive of the presence of the Son, but not of the fulness of the Father. 78 Wherefore, they are bodies terrestrial, and not bodies celestial, and differ in glory as the moon differs from the sun. 79 These are they who are not valiant in the testimony of Jesus; wherefore, they obtain not the crown over the kingdom of our God. 80 And now this is the end of the vision which we saw of the terrestrial, that the Lord commanded us to write while we were yet in the Spirit.
81 And again, we saw the glory of the telestial, which glory is that of the lesser, even as the glory of the stars differs from that of the glory of the moon in the firmament. 82 These are they who received not the gospel of Christ, neither the testimony of Jesus. 83 These are they who deny not the Holy Spirit. 84 These are they who are thrust down to hell. 85 These are they who shall not be redeemed from the devil until the last resurrection, until the Lord, even Christ the Lamb, shall have finished his work. 86 These are they who receive not of his fulness in the eternal world, but of the Holy Spirit through the ministration of the terrestrial; 87 And the terrestrial through the ministration of the celestial. 88 And also the telestial receive it of the administering of angels who are appointed to minister for them, or who are appointed to be ministering spirits for them; for they shall be heirs of salvation. 89 And thus we saw, in the heavenly vision, the glory of the telestial, which surpasses all understanding; 90 And no man knows it except him to whom God has revealed it.
91 And thus we saw the glory of the terrestrial which excels in all things the glory of the telestial, even in glory, and in power, and in might, and in dominion. 92 And thus we saw the glory of the celestial, which excels in all things’where God, even the Father, reigns upon his throne forever and ever; 93 Before whose throne all things bow in humble reverence, and give him glory forever and ever. 94 They who dwell in his presence are the church of the Firstborn; and they see as they are seen, and know as they are known, having received of his fulness and of his grace; 95 And he makes them equal in power, and in might, and in dominion.
96 And the glory of the celestial is one, even as the glory of the sun is one. 97 And the glory of the terrestrial is one, even as the glory of the moon is one. 98 And the glory of the telestial is one, even as the glory of the stars is one; for as one star differs from another star in glory, even so differs one from another in glory in the telestial world; 99 For these are they who are of Paul, and of Apollos, and of Cephas. 100 These are they who say they are some of one and some of another’some of Christ and some of John, and some of Moses, and some of Elias, and some of Esaias, and some of Isaiah, and some of Enoch; 101 But received not the gospel, neither the testimony of Jesus, neither the prophets, neither the everlasting covenant. 102 Last of all, these all are they who will not be gathered with the saints, to be caught up unto the church of the Firstborn, and received into the cloud. 103 These are they who are liars, and sorcerers, and adulterers, and whoremongers, and whosoever loves and makes a lie. 104 These are they who suffer the wrath of God on earth. 105 These are they who suffer the vengeance of eternal fire. 106 These are they who are cast down to hell and suffer the wrath of Almighty God, until the fulness of times, when Christ shall have subdued all enemies under his feet, and shall have perfected his work;
107 When he shall deliver up the kingdom, and present it unto the Father, spotless, saying: I have overcome and have trodden the wine–press alone, even the wine–press of the fierceness of the wrath of Almighty God. 108 Then shall he be crowned with the crown of his glory, to sit on the throne of his power to reign forever and ever.
109 But behold, and lo, we saw the glory and the inhabitants of the telestial world, that they were as innumerable as the stars in the firmament of heaven, or as the sand upon the seashore; 110 And heard the voice of the Lord saying: These all shall bow the knee, and every tongue shall confess to him who sits upon the throne forever and ever; 111 For they shall be judged according to their works, and every man shall receive according to his own works, his own dominion, in the mansions which are prepared; 112 And they shall be servants of the Most High; but where God and Christ dwell they cannot come, worlds without end. octrine and Covenants | Section 76:50 – 112)
The scriptures do imply that the choices we make during our time of probation will lead to permanent consequenses, in other words, there is no indication that we can change glories (kingdoms) after the final judgement. That is why I think it is so critical for each individual to get serious about finding out the truth for themselves. 5 If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. 6 But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. (James 1:5 – 6)
I consider the greatest blessing of my life is that I am bound to my parents, brothers and sister and to my dear Debbie and our sons in an eternal covenant. I hope to endure in worthiness for that blessing to be realized.
Let me know if you have further questions.
