My Beliefs

Donny Osmond

“As I’ve traveled all over the world, the fact that I’m a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has caused a lot of interesting questions. I’ve received so many letters and e-mails asking things like, What are the basic beliefs of Latter-day Saints?”

My Testimony

…Some want to know how Debbie and I have been able to maintain a strong marriage — over all these years — while living in the world of show business. Others want to know how we dealt with the challenges of raising a close and happy family in such difficult times.

How do we maintain a balance between work, and family life? Well, you know it’s not always easy, but the following pages are my attempt to explain a way of life that helps answer these kinds of questions. It gives me stability in a world, and in a business, that can be uncertain, compromising, and stressful. It’s the pattern that gives me direction in my life. And, I hope that this information will help answer some of your questions.

  • Marriage Amongst Older People

I am an investigator ( who has studied the Book of Mormon and all else I can find in depth and am exploring a relationship with an LDS widower. I understand the rules about who can be sealed to who and under what circumstances. However most of the examples given apply to much younger couples who have been widowed or divorced . My intended is a widower, was married for 45 years and sealed to her. If I convert and we eventually get married I understand that we would eventually go to the Temple to be sealed. How does that work in terms of eternal marriages. I was a friend of his late wife and have no problem with him being sealed to us both in heaven but it brings up all sorts of dilemmas like burial arrangements ( they have a plot beside his late wife for him) and how his children might feel about him being sealed to me as well as their mother. I realise that had I been sealed before to someone that we would have been married only for Time. What is the norm in this situation ?

I am very pleased that you are investigating The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

I would like to express to you my deep conviction, along with those others who have born this witness to you, that it is in reality the same church that Christ organized in ancient times now restored to the earth in these latter days.

When I was just sixteen years old, I realized that I needed to find out for myself of the truthfulness of the Book of Mormon and of the Church. I decided to put to a real test the promise at the end of the book:

“And when ye shall receive these things, I would exhort you that ye would ask God, the Eternal Father, in the name of Christ, if these things are not true; and if ye shall ask with a sincere heart, with real intent, having faith in Christ, he will manifest the truth of it unto you, by the power of the Holy Ghost. And by the power of the Holy Ghost ye may know the truth of all things.” (Book of Mormon – Moroni 10:4)

I read the Book of Mormon and prayed and the spirit did fill heart with an assurance of its truthfulness. That spiritual conviction has sustained me throughout my life.

    The promise applies to everyone:

“Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you:” (Matthew 7:7)
The Holy Ghosts speaks to us in is a still small voice (1 Kings 19:12, 1 Nephi 17:45) but it is accompanied by a feeling of peace and love and pure knowledge.

I am sure you have been taught already in these matters, but I am emphasizing this source of knowledge to you again because you are facing an opportunity that will bless you more than you can possibly comprehend which is to become an heir of God and a joint heir with Christ.

The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.
    (Romans 8:16-17)

What will it mean to be a joint heir with Christ?

God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the
fathers by the prophets, Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds; (Hebrews 1:1-2)

These eternal promises are completely foreign to the world, because they have been revealed in these latter days through prophets that the world will not accept. They are clarified in the temple, especially in the promises of the sealing or binding covenant of eternal marriage. these ordinances this opportunity to enter into covenants that will promise you these blessing is a rare and special blessing.

    Here is one such revelation:

In the celestial glory there are three heavens or degrees; And in order to obtain the highest, a man[or woman] must enter into this order of the priesthood [meaning the new and everlasting covenant of marriage]; And if he [or she] does not, he [or she] cannot obtain it. He [or she] may enter into the other, but that is the end of his [or her] kingdom; he [or she] cannot have an increase. To “have an increase” is part of that inherited opportunity as “heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ” who is “appointed heir of all things” spoken of in the passages above. (Doctrine & Covenants 131:1-40

The religions of the world have no idea of such in the eternities.

The relationships that you will enter into and that will prevail in that glorious realm, will be beautiful and sacred. How all this will come to pass, only God knows but I am confident it will be accompanied by a “fullness of joy” forever.

But, behold, the righteous, the saints of the Holy One of Israel, they who have believed in the Holy One of Israel, they who have endured the crosses of the world, and despised the shame of it, they shall inherit the kingdom of God, which was prepared for them from the foundation of the world, and their joy shall be full forever. (Book of Mormon – 2 Nephi 9:18)

The promises of eternity that we receive in the Holy Temples are so great and everlasting, that no complication on this earth could stand in the way. Where the mortal bodies are buried, what the children may think, your age or the fact that you were married civilly before are small matters in comparison to the promised eternal blessings.

This is not an uncommon occurrence under circumstances such as yours. I would encourage you to follow your heart. If you love the man and do all you can do to be worthy of the great blessings that are in store for you, then peace will fill your soul and you will know exactly what your decision should be.
